Science at Petersfield Infant School
At Petersfield Infant School, we aim to provide the children with many experiences of the world around them, including how and why things work, grow and change. We try to instill awe and wonder into their learning. Science needs to be practical – a subject based on investigation and discovery. Science is about trying to explain the Universe and testing our explanations. Children need to ask the question ‘Why?’, try to find answers and not take things for granted.
In Year R, the children learn about Science through Knowledge and Understanding of the world. We take on a hands on, practical approach to Science, encouraging the children to make simple observations and to identify similarities and differences in what they see. During the year we go on two Science related trips. These trips bring the topics to life!!
In Year One, the children cover a wide variety of topics and will begin to learn to record their observations and findings. We ensure that there is sufficient progress from similar topics covered in Year R and Year 1.
In Year 2, The children will learn to give cause and effect by giving evidence for their findings.
There is a ‘Science Day’ every year where a topic is chosen ie: water and the whole school spend an entire day exploring and investigating different aspects of the topic.
It is a wonderful practical, hands on experience and opportunity for the children and has always been extremely successful!
