Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!

This week we have looked for signs of autumn with an autumn walk of the school grounds!

We have also been creating works of art using natural resources, colour mixing to match autumn objects, and carefully painting autumn leaves using reds, oranges and yellows.

This week Year R experienced their very first Woodland Wonder Day.

The children were very excited to visit the amazing outdoor classroom area and couldn’t wait to get started! They listened to the story of Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and were then set the challenge of building a nest for the owls using natural resources. Some children worked independently and others chose to work collaboratively. There was a lot of discussion as the building of nests took place, with a big focus on language related to size and shape. They were all very proud of their nests and couldn’t wait to show them off to the owls! The children can’t wait to have another Woodland Wonder Day soon!

In Maths, the children have been learning about repeating patterns. Using natural autumn objects, they created their own repeating patterns and talked about them.

This week in Maths, Year R have been learning all about 2D shapes.  The children have been learning the names and properties of the shapes, and then developing their spatial awareness as they use them to create shape pictures.

The children enjoyed learning about the book The Colour Monster, and learning the names of different feelings.  They found out new techniques to regulate their emotions, such as listening to calming music, or doing mindful colouring.  They worked on colour mixing to see how different colours combine, before creating their own colour monster paintings.

The children have developed their mark making skills through the Circle Game, working in all sorts of different media, such as chalk, big whiteboard, pens, coloured sand and even shaving foam!

This week in Maths Year R have been learning to use their eyes to subitise 1, 2 and 3 objects.  This means that we can recognise a small group without needing to count!

The children enjoyed mark making, drawing and writing. We have also started to learn four new letter sounds in phonics.

The children have been practising their cutting and sticking skills on our new making tables. Look at the fantastic kites that we created and then flew outside.

Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!

This week Year R have been pouring their own cereal and milk at the Snack Shack. The children have also been learning how to wash up and dry their own bowls afterwards!

We have had our first PE lesson in the hall, where the children loved moving around in different ways and playing some traditional games.

After reading about how families are all different and all special, the children created their own family pictures.
