Stars of the week!
Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!
This week we have been learning about how some people celebrate the Lunar New Year (or Chinese New Year). We listened to the story of ‘The Great Race’ and learnt that each new year is named after 12 different animals. 2024 is to be the year of the dragon! We found out that many Chinese people believe that red is a lucky colour and instead of gifts, children receive a lucky red envelope with money in it.
At the craft table, we had a go at making our own dragons.
We have enjoyed using chopsticks and noodles in our role play and exploration.
We also had a go at writing our name with paint, going from top to bottom, just like traditional Chinese writing.
In Music we have been doing a Dragon Dance, which is part of the Lunar New Year celebrations and it is believed to ward off evil spirits. In Chinese culture, dragons are thought of as helpful and friendly creatures and people associate them with good luck, long life and wisdom.
This week has also been Children’s Mental Health Week. We have been participating in lots of different activities to help keep our brains healthy. We have been listening to songs that make us laugh, songs to help us stay calm, we have done some mindfulness colouring and joined in with some Yoga too.
