Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!

This week we have been learning about how some people celebrate the Lunar New Year (or Chinese New Year). We listened to the story of ‘The Great Race’ and learnt that each new year is named after 12 different animals. 2024 is to be the year of the dragon! We found out that many Chinese people believe that red is a lucky colour and instead of gifts, children receive a lucky red envelope with money in it.

At the craft table, we had a go at making our own dragons.

We have enjoyed using chopsticks and noodles in our role play and exploration.

We also had a go at writing our name with paint, going from top to bottom, just like traditional Chinese writing.

In Music we have been doing a Dragon Dance, which is part of the Lunar New Year celebrations and it is believed to ward off evil spirits. In Chinese culture, dragons are thought of as helpful and friendly creatures and people associate them with good luck, long life and wisdom.

This week has also been Children’s Mental Health Week. We have been participating in lots of different activities to help keep our brains healthy. We have been listening to songs that make us laugh, songs to help us stay calm, we have done some mindfulness colouring and  joined in with some Yoga too.

We have had an extremely busy week. Enjoy your well deserved half term holiday Year R!

This week we have been reading and retelling the story The Three Little Pigs.

The children used their design skills to build houses for the pigs and draw maps of the story.

On our Woodland Wonder day this week we built a den for the pigs and learnt how to build a sturdy brick wall for a new house!

This week we have been reading the story We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. The children have become experts at telling the story – really thinking about what makes a good story teller!

The children used the small world to create their own bear hunt and then worked together to tell the story to their friends.

We thought it might be useful to make some maps to help us retell the story. The children drew the different parts of the story and used the maps to go on their own bear hunts outside!

Then we wondered what would happen if the river was flooded and we couldn’t get across! The children decided we might need a boat or a bridge to help us cross the river. In Drawing Club they drew some ideas showing how to cross the river. Then got busy building bridges both inside and out – some even had real water underneath!

Using junk modelling, the children worked as designers to produce a boat that would be able to hold a small world person or animal to cross the river. They took their boats outside and tested them. They discovered that some materials got very soggy and others stayed dry!

Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!

This week we have been learning all about winter.  We created loose part snowflakes and talked about the changing seasons and what happens in cold weather.

We created beautiful snowflake art using chalks too!

Our story of the week was Betty and the Yeti.  We developed our design skills by creating our own life size, lego and junk modelling sleds, then tested them on slopes in the Year R playground.

Later in the week, it became very wintery, and we enjoyed ice play outdoors.  We mixed the ice with paint, and experimented with different ways to make it melt.

This week we have been learning about cold places.  We drew pictures to show what we might see if we went to a very cold place and what we can see where we live.

We also designed our own penguin masks.  We cut out the paper carefully before joining it together to create our masks.

We have made a busy start to 2024!
In PHSE we learnt about things that are safe to put on our bodies, including warm clothes, soap for washing, and bandages when we need them, and how we might help our babies who have been feeling a bit poorly this week!

In music we have begun to immerse ourselves in the theme of Chinese New Year. We explored musical beat, played imaginary instruments, and engaged in lively dragon parades!

At our making tables we have explored joining materials in 3-dimensions. We have experimented with different joining techniques such as masking tape, glue sticks and PVA glue.
