Congratulations to the Year R Stars of the Week!

We had a fantastic time on Science Day.  Dr Geary showed us lots of wonderful experiments, such as elephant toothpaste and walking on eggs.  We spent time exploring with magnets, making our own fossils and then we all headed outside.  Our favourite part of the day was seeing the explosive reaction between Mentos and fizzy drinks.  Amazing!

In Scarf we have been learning all about money.  We talked about where our grown ups get money from, and why money is important to buy the things we need, such as food.

Our woodland wonder day was based around dinosaurs!  We became fossil hunters and searched for bones in the mud, carefully excavating them and brushing them off.  We then spent time down in the woods, creating habitats for the dinosaurs and having a little dinosaur adventure.

The Year R children have all been taking a turn to go outside with our volunteer gardeners, Mrs A and Mrs B. They have left apples for the birds, and planted and grown flowers and herbs.  The potatoes are chitting by the window, and will hopefully be planted next week, when the shoots and sprouts are a bit bigger.

We had a visit from Andy Seed, the author, who shared his amazing stories with us, too.  What a busy week!

This week we have been reading Where the Wild Things Are.  We created our own monsters and made crowns to celebrate the coronation of the King of the Wild Things.

In Maths we learnt how to find double. We also made some beautiful symmetrical butterfly pictures.

One of our star challenges this week was litter picking. The children really helped to keep our outside area clean and tidy! We also enjoyed digging, planting and watering in the mud pit.

This week we have looked at paintings by other artists and have been busy developing our watercolour skills to paint our own designs.

We had a special workshop where we learnt about our bodies and what we need to stay healthy.

Another highlight of the week was World Book Day! We loved our animal themed day, making our own class books about unusual animals (based on our reading of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?), creating masks and hats and showing off some of our fantastic Book-in-a-Box creations!

This week we have been thinking about how the season is beginning to change from winter to spring. We set a challenge  to find some signs of spring in our school grounds.

In the Snack Shack we looked at paintings by water colour artists as our snack and chat focus. We learnt how to use water colours to paint pictures. We had a go at exploring water colours in Discovery Time. It was tricky to judge how wet to make your brush, but we soon got the hang of it!

We really enjoyed building up our gross motor muscles using the bikes and scooters – it was great fun! We tried different speeds and had to watch out for each other on the playground road!

This week at snack shack we have been developing our knife skills and learning about food hygiene.  We talked about never taking a knife without a grown up, and how to hold a knife safely.  We then worked on the skill of chopping a banana, using the claw method to make sure our fingers are safely tucked away.  We talked about why we wash our hands before we prepare food or eat a snack, and why we wash up afterwards with warm soapy water.

In Drawing Club we have had lots of fun with the book ‘Would You Rather?’ thinking about which things we prefer.  We used our phonic knowledge to write about what we could see if we chose to visit a spooky house or go on a boat.  We played a fun game of Would You Rather? and wrote about the things we would choose to eat.

In Maths we have been learning about the different ways in which we can represent number.  We played a matching pairs game, looking at numberblocks and finger representations of different numbers, and trying to find pair.

In PSHE we have been thinking about the people who are special in our families and the important roles we have to look after each other.  We then painted and drew pictures of the special people in our lives and talked about how we can look after our special people.
