History

The National Curriculum: History
A high quality history education will help pupils to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of peoples lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Our vision for history at Petersfield

At Petersfield Infant School we believe that the purpose of history is to enable children to build their knowledge of the past and also to gain an understanding of how historians study the past. Our history topics are informed by the EYFS and National Curriculum. They are carefully planned and structured to ensure pupils build on their knowledge and understanding and make progress towards developing historical skills.

High quality history lessons should inspire children’s curiosity and support them to see the richness and complexity of the past. History is taught through historical enquiries which are designed to build on children’s prior knowledge. Children will develop their chronological understanding, ask and answer questions, sift through evidence and think for themselves to reach their own conclusions based on what they have learnt.

We want children to develop their own unique identity through learning about the history of their own lives, our local area, Britain and the wider world. In this way we can help children to make connections between events and people across time. Our history curriculum aims to inform and encourage children to think, speak and act for themselves so that they can become responsible members of an inclusive society that embraces diversity, now and in the future.
