Autumn 1 Week 6
🌈 Reception
This week, we have continued to finish off our Year R Baseline Assessments. The children have worked incredibly hard and have been fantastic at showing us just how much they already know. It has been such a lovely experience spending some one-to-one time with each child and getting to know more about their individual strengths, interests and knowledge.
We are so proud of how confidently the children have approached their assessments and how hard they have tried. They have certainly shown us that they are ready for all the exciting learning ahead!
🔢 Year 1 Maths
In Maths, Year 1 have been learning about parts and wholes of numbers. We have been exploring how numbers can be made up of smaller parts and beginning to think carefully about the different ways we can represent a whole number.
The children have enjoyed using practical resources to help them explore these ideas and have been working hard to explain their mathematical thinking.
🦁 Drawing Club
Our Year 1 children have been getting stuck into The Lion Inside during Drawing Club this week. They have come up with some incredible ideas and have been using some wonderful adjectives to describe their characters and settings.
It has been fantastic to see their imaginations really come to life through their drawings and stories. We have been particularly impressed with the vocabulary the children are beginning to use and the detail they are adding to their ideas.
✏️ Phonics & Writing
We are continuing to focus on using our phonics when writing words and remembering those important capital letters and full stops. We are encouraging the children to listen carefully for the sounds they can hear in words and to have a go at writing them independently.
Autumn 1 Week 5
What a fantastic week we have had!
It has been another busy and exciting week in our mixed Year R and Year 1 class. The children have been working incredibly hard, and we are so proud of the enthusiasm, curiosity and resilience they have shown throughout the week.
📚 Year R Baseline Assessments
This week, we have been working hard to complete our Year R baseline assessments. The children have shown us just how much they already know and have settled into their new routines brilliantly. We have been particularly impressed with their confidence and willingness to have a go, even when something has been a little tricky.
🦈 Shark in the Park
Our story this week has been Shark in the Park, which has been a huge hit with the children!
We have had lots of fun exploring the story and thinking about what we might spot through a telescope. The children made their very own telescopes and then used them to imagine and write about the things they could see. This provided lots of opportunities for developing vocabulary, sentence writing and using our imaginations.
There were certainly some very interesting things spotted through those telescopes!
🔢 Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about representing numbers in different ways and comparing numbers.
The children have been exploring which numbers are greater than, less than or equal to one another and have begun using the symbols > and < to compare numbers. We have been using practical resources and representations to help us explain our mathematical thinking.
🍞 RE – The Harvest Loaf
In RE, we have been learning about the Harvest Loaf and thinking about what it represents to Christians.
We explored the importance of harvest and how Christians give thanks for the food they have and for the people and resources that help to provide it. The children enjoyed discussing what harvest means to them and making links with their own experiences.
🔬 Science – Materials
Our young scientists have also been busy! We have started to explore materials and develop our understanding of their different properties.
We have been thinking about what different objects are made from and beginning to describe materials using words such as hard, soft, smooth, rough, strong and flexible. We are looking forward to investigating materials further and discovering more about their properties.
Autumn 1 Week 4
This week, we have enjoyed the fantastic story Shark in the Park, which has provided lots of opportunities for talking, listening and developing our imaginations. We have used the story as part of our Drawing Club sessions, encouraging the children to develop their vocabulary, drawing skills and early writing. The children have been busy creating their own ideas and using pictures and words to share their thinking. It has been lovely to see everyone brushing off those summer holiday cobwebs and getting back into the swing of writing!
🔢 Maths
In Maths, we have been working hard on counting forwards and backwards. The children have been practising their number sequences and developing their confidence with numbers.
Our Year 1 children have also been developing their understanding of greater than and less than, using the symbols > and < to compare numbers. They have enjoyed thinking carefully about which numbers are bigger and smaller and explaining how they know.
🌾 RE
In RE, we have continued to explore the importance of symbols and have begun to link our learning to the Harvest Festival. The children have been thinking about what harvest means and the different ways people celebrate and show thankfulness for the food and resources we have.
🌟 Reception
Our Reception children have been busy completing their baseline assessments. These are helping us to find out more about each child and their individual starting points, so that we can support their learning and development as they begin their school journey.
It has also been fantastic to see our Reception children really getting into the flow of school life. They are becoming increasingly confident with our routines, making friends and exploring their new environment.
🥪 Snack Shack
Our Snack Shack has also got off to a fantastic start! The children have been developing their independence by choosing and managing their own snacks, practising important skills such as making choices, tidying up and looking after themselves.
Autumn 1 Week 3
What a lovely week we have had! The children have been thoroughly enjoying lots of Discovery Time, exploring their interests, developing their independence and learning through play and practical experiences.
In Drawing Club, we have been exploring the story of Chicken Licken. The children have enjoyed talking about the characters and have particularly enjoyed describing the fox. They have used their imaginations to create drawings and share their ideas, developing their vocabulary and confidence when talking about their work.
In Maths, we have had lots of practical, hands-on opportunities to explore grouping in different ways. The children have been sorting and organising objects, talking about how groups can be made and changed, and explaining their mathematical thinking. It has been wonderful to see them learning through practical experiences and working together to solve problems.
We have also begun our Christmas preparations this week. The children have started preparing their Christmas cards, taking care with their creations and enjoying the excitement of getting ready for the festive season.
In RE, we have been learning about symbols and thinking about how symbols can represent something that is important to us. The children enjoyed designing their own symbols to represent our school, explaining their ideas and thinking carefully about what their symbol could mean.
This week, we have also made a start on Reading Club and Phonics. The children have been introduced to our routines and have enjoyed beginning to develop their reading skills. We are looking forward to building on this over the coming weeks.
