Physical Education

At Petersfield Infant School, our Physical Education curriculum aims to inspire all children to enjoy being active and to develop the confidence, skills, and motivation needed for lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. Through carefully planned and engaging lessons, we nurture every child’s physical, social, and emotional development, ensuring they experience success, enjoyment, and a sense of achievement.
In Year R, children follow a sequence of tailored Hampshire planning and Val Sabin planning, which provides a strong foundation in movement, coordination, and control. This approach links closely with the Oak National Academy planning used in Key Stage 1, ensuring a smooth and coherent progression of skills and understanding as children move through the school. Our curriculum offers a wide variety of opportunities for children to develop their agility, balance, and coordination through games, gymnastics, dance, and outdoor activities. Lessons are inclusive, engaging, and supportive, enabling all children to develop at their own pace while fostering a lifelong love of movement and physical activity.
Our school values of Resilience, Kindness, and Respect underpin everything we do in PE. Children are encouraged to be resilient by trying their best, embracing challenges, and learning from mistakes. They demonstrate kindness by supporting and encouraging one another, working cooperatively, and celebrating each other’s successes. Respect is promoted through fair play, teamwork, and good sportsmanship, helping children to develop a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others.
Through Physical Education, we aim to develop confident, resilient, and respectful young learners who value being active and healthy. At Petersfield Infant School, we believe that PE plays a vital role in developing the whole child, fostering not only physical competence but also emotional wellbeing, self-belief, and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity

Our vision for PE at Petersfield
At Petersfield Infant School, we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development.
The aim of Physical Education is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles and children are taught from as early as Reception, how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and, using the medium of physical activity, increase their self-esteem and wellbeing.
Our PE Curriculum, alongside PDL and Science, teaches children about the importance of healthy living and the many benefits of physical activity. At Petersfield Infant School, we aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming independent, physically active citizens, to benefit their long-term health and well-being.
